THE ADVENTURES OF ALICE IN TYPHOIDLAND

On a golden afternoon in 1864, Alice Liddell went on a magical tour. Whilst being rowed in a boat, she heard a story about a rabbit in a nice coat. But this is not the story of the trip that led to Wonderland. Glide with us on a murky ride as we journey down the sewer hole into Oxford’s underside – there is much to show in typhoidland…

Museum of Oxford

Our permanent exhibition case at the Museum of Oxford reconstructs the history of sanitation upgrades and typhoid control from the perspective of Oxford city planners.

SANITATION & TYPHOID IN OXFORD (1850-1887)

Poor drainage and the lack of sewers meant that low-lying parts of Oxford were described as “a swamp converted into a cesspool” in 1850. See the changes in water and sanitation structures that transformed the city.
